IE6 Support

We've been watching the debate over whether modern designers should create web sites and web applications that continue to support Internet Explorer 6 as they continue to develop and learn methods of content delivery. We've often leaned toward the side that cuts off support for IE6 altogether, but there are several major, respectable players on the side that say it should continue to be supported. When it comes to our own "policy", we haven't had to create or enforce one as most of our clients don't use IE6 and apparently don't have many friends that do either, for we rarely hear "this is broken in IE6..." from anyone.

(enlarge)However, two things have prompted us to take a step in the direction of phasing out support for IE6: the latest Net Applications monthly usage share figures and Google's own phasing out of support for IE6.

Rather than write a tome on the reasons for and against and why we've chosen one over the other, we're just going to state the inevitable:

As of July 2010, we will no longer offer support for Internet Explorer 6, meaning we will not be bug fixing or hacking our sites so that IE6 displays them properly. The web has moved on, major players like Google have moved on , even MicroSoft has moved on and no longer supports IE6. It's time we move on as well.

Spotlighting Our Clients

It seems the Squarespace gods have smiled on our little studio yet again. Two of our recent projects made it onto Squarespace's portfolio examples page! High praise indeed. Those pages change every now and then, so I thought I'd be gratuitous and capture a couple screen shots:

More on TypeKit

The last time I mentioned TypeKit —the simple, bulletproof, standards compliant, accessible, and totally legal way to use non-system standard fonts on a website— they were in beta. They went live in early November and I've been watching and waiting to see how things pan out. In a very short period of time they've added quite a few foundries to their list of available fonts and highlighted a major site or two that are using their services. All well and good! There is one thing that perplexes me, however, specifically in relation to my own business model: the 50/250 spread.

Chrome

Google Chrome is finally available as an official beta for Mac. Not surprisingly, Google takes their own approach to browsing, namely dispensing with a search box and including that functionality in the address bar. Other little touches include:

  • a status bar that only appears when there's an actual status, saving a few pixels of screen real estate;
  • tabs on top (which Safari 4's beta had but unfortunately lost on the official release), saving more screen real estate;
  • minimalist design;
  • skinning/themes; and,
  • tabs that open next to the tab you're in when links are set to open new browser windows.

That last feature is particularly useful as I'll no longer have to search for the new tab at the end of the tab bar rainbow, if you will. A feature missing from the official beta that was in the pre-betas is full screen mode. I hope that returns in v1.

I enjoyed the pre-Beta releases very much and even used Chrome to develop two customer sites (JbIT and Matt Anderson) on the Squarespace platform. I've also used it to tighten up my own site a bit. As with my default Safari browser, Chrome is based on the webkit engine, yet it rendered things a bit differently here and there, making it quite useful as I coded (I suppose I should be wary of a browser being too forgiving when it comes to handling code).

Looking forward to added functionality with the v1 release. Go Google.
