Getting More from Less

When I saw the title of the WORKawesome blog’s latest entry —6 Ways to Get More From Your Commute Time— my eyes rolled. It reminded of my days in “Fortune 500 World” where the advent of BlackBerry meant I was never really off the clock. This included not just my nights and weekends but also my commute, which consisted of a 25 minute ride on the express train, a 10 minute subway schlepp under Metro DC and a three block walk to the glittering tower of Big Company. Always being one to subtly buck the well established system, however, I would use my short train ride to indulge in a definitive guilty pleasure: sleep.

Thus it seemed that clicking the link would provide me with a bulleted response to the all too memorable conference call with middle-management waxing on about Big Company, how we must maximize productivity for Big Company, how Big Company loves us and wants what’s best for our families, etc. Of course there was a hat tip to so the so-called “work/life balance”, but the “life” part of that balance was solidly rooted in and stemmed from the “work” part.

Adobe Fonts Come to Typekit

Typekit announced today that Adobe and Typekit are teaming up to bring some of the world’s most popular, recognizable, and respected fonts to the web. At present there are 24 fonts being offered. A good start; Font Squirrel's @Font-Face Generator will remain at the ready for the immediate future.

We're big TypeKit fans and are pleased to see this evolution. I've already updated some of my client's web sites, and Bryan at Typekit is right: the fonts look fantastic.

Why Squarespace?

It's no secret that we're Squarespace fans. Several of our customers have sites featured on Squarespace's examples page; as such we receive several requests each month from professionals and businesses alike for more information on the ins-and-outs of using Squarespace and how they can get on board (and how we can help!). Why all the fuss?

Several sources provide the answer(s) to that question in detail —some of which are linked below. Here, I'll offer a brief summary of why we continue to choose Squarespace to focus on providing well designed, intuitive sites on the Squarespace platform. I'll assume that you're taken the tour of their services and are familiar with their About page.

Hello Typekit

We've written about Typekit before and today we took the plunge.Typekit —a subscription-based service for linking to high-quality Open Type fonts from some of the worlds best type foundries— now supplies our site's fonts. I suppose this makes us as important as the Journal or the Times. Maybe not. But we're at least as smart as they are when it comes to having good, clean, decent looking fonts that reach cross-platform and cross browser.

We'd been keeping an eye on the foundries added lately and happened to revisit the issue of using Typekit the same day they altered their plans and opened the floodgates. Good timing! As an added bonus, our iPhone and iPad using visitors will now see this site in all its fontastic glory. No more Arial on the iPhone... dreams do come true.

Here's to you, Typekit. We're looking forward to a long relationship!
